La notte di San Juan a Maiorca

Giugno 06 2019
Cultura e gastronomia
June is a month known for one of the most special nights of the year on Majorca. The 23rd of June is Saint John’s Eve, the shortest night of the year, when we welcome the summer season. There are many different ways to celebrate Saint John’s Eve, some more traditional than others, although new ways to celebrate have become tradition as well.

Saint John’s Eve commemorates the arrival of the summer solstice and is widely celebrated across Majorca, also in Palmanova and Santa Ponça, home to Reverence Hotels.

Fireworks, music and folk dances are the main ingredients of the night. People dance around bonfires to the rhythm of music. The fire represents the end and the beginning of a cycle, it is a renewal and purification ceremony. Many people end the evening (or start the 24th, Saint John’s Day) bathing in the sea, while others get into the water on their back at midnight to make a wish or launch Chinese lanterns into the sky.

In Palma, the traditional “correfoc” fire run takes place in front of the Cathedral, with demons filling the air with sparks and smoke to the rhythm of drums and inciting viewers to run.

Saint John’s Eve is clearly a very special night on the island, a unique night full of magic that is worth experiencing firsthand. It is a great opportunity to get closer to the traditional, unique side of the island as opposed to its more cosmopolitan and international vibe.

Reverence Hotels invite you to visit Majorca to experience Saint John’s Eve for yourself. It is night you will never forget, a night to say goodbye to spring and welcome summer, a magic night that invites you to purify yourself.
