5 Great Activities to Enjoy Christmas on Mallorca!

Mallorca is a great place to visit no matter the season. Although it is a very popular travel destination particularly in spring and summer, Christmas is also a very special time of the year on the island. And that's exactly what we want to talk about in this post.

Mallorca is well known both for its long-standing traditions and for other more recent initiatives that make Mallorca a great destination to enjoy your Christmas holidays and greet the New Year. In fact, many of these activities are within easy reach of our Reverence Hotels: Reverence Life Santa Ponsa and Reverence Mare Palmanova.

Let's start with one of our favourite traditions, which goes back a long way: the Song of the Sibyl. Heard on Christmas Eve in many churches across Mallorca and declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, the chant —particularly the one performed in Palma Cathedral— is a must-go-to event. The Song of the Sibyl is a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages and that is also known as the Final Judgement, as its lyrics comprise a prophecy describing the Apocalypse.

Our second suggestion is to walk the streets of Palma after the Christmas lights have been switched on. With new additions and improvements every year, the Christmas lights in Palma are truly spectacular. So it is no wonder that many people take a picture of them and post it on Instagram, sharing a beautiful festive snapshot and an indelible memory of Mallorca. And, again, just a few minutes away from our hotels Reverence Life Santa Ponsa and Reverence Mare Palmanova.

Our third suggestion: After exploring the streets of the capital of Mallorca, with its amazing historic centre and shopping streets, you can continue with some of the best pastries the island has to offer to recharge your batteries. One of the best places to go to is the antiquated bakery "Can Joan de S'Aigo", preferably its oldest location, established in 1700 at Calle Can Sanç. One of the first chocolaterías in Europe, it is packed with lots of history, and it is frequented by many locals who want to enjoy a delicious hot chocolate and an ensaimada after attending to the Song of the Sibyl.

Also in Palma, the heart of Mallorca, our fourth proposal has to do with crafts and a tradition that is still very much alive in many local homes: setting up a nativity scene. Therefore, we highly recommend a visit to the Christmas market at Plaza Mayor, where local artisans make and sell nativity figurines and shepherds. You cannot miss the stall run by Andreu and Antònia, two well-known local artisans who hand-model their clay shepherds and paint them themselves.

And last but not least, you cannot leave the island without first visiting the Christmas Market in Puerto Portals (Calviá), one of the most important marinas on Mallorca, also a stone's throw away from the Reverence hotels: Reverence Mare Palmanova and Reverence Life Santa Ponsa. Open from 15 December to 7 of January, more than 40 wooden stalls with Christmas decorations offer a wide variety of products, from toys to ornaments and, of course, food and delicacies. There is also a skating rink and a packed agenda with many fun activities!

We are looking forward to seeing you on Mallorca!
